Just Transition for All

Ghana
A 2021 report which assesses fossil fuel industry plans to sink USD $230 billion into the development of new extraction projects in Africa in the next decade — and USD $1.4 trillion by 2050. It finds these projects are not compatible with a safe climate future and that they are at risk of becoming stranded assets that leave behind unfunded clean-up, shortfalls of government revenue, and overnight job losses. The report also contains country-level analysis for the top 16 projected oil, gas, and coal producers in Africa for 2020-2050. A 2022 report which shows the scale of financial support provided by commercial banks, development finance institutions and Export Credit Agencies (ECAs) that flowed to the fossil fuel industry in West, Central, East and Southern Africa in the period between 2016, the year in which the Paris Agreement entered into force, and the end of June 2021. In addition, it highlights the private and public-sector financial institutions most responsible for these flows. A 2020 report which analyses the question what the best solution is for limiting global warming to 1.5C on the one hand, and facilitating universal energy access on the other hand. Furthermore, it analyses the question what the role of public financial institutions like export credit agencies (ECAs) could be in terms of promoting a green energy future in Africa. A 2014 journal which is focused on drawing the lessons from a few transition experiences in order to analyze how successfully (or not) these processes were managed in the past and how future transitions might be handled in a just manner. The articles all address one or several of the elements highlighted by the International Labour Conference (ILC) conclusions as part of the 'just transition' framework, and provide a rationale and solid justification for the use of these policies in the transition towards sustainability. Hot Reports

Covid-19 and a Just Transition in India's Coal Mining Sector The COVID 19 pandemic hit India hard in early 2020, with negative GDP growth and a surge in unemployment. In the energy sector, coal fired power generation was already under pressure from overcapacity, low electricity demand growth, and increasingly competitive renewables.
Considerations for a Just and Equitable Energy Transition As the energy transition accelerates, it is our responsibility, it is our opportunity, to ensure that in addition to contributing to a healthy planet by replacing fossil fuels with clean energy sources, this is accomplished in a just and equitable manner providing prosperity for all.
